The OASIS Project is an annual open call design competition to create designer bus shelters for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) bus system. Each year a selected design(s) will move forward in the design process with the winning designer(s) assisting the Atlanta chapter of Architecture for Humanity developing the construction documents. The design will be installed at one or more bus stops along MARTA where there is high MARTA traffic and currently no shelter. Along with the design and construction of the shelter(s), AFHA engages the community around the location where the shelter is installed in order to get community involvement by way of adopting the shelter and becoming the primary point of contact for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the site.
Chairman Rick Glassman talks about OASIS and our current Shelter Sites.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION IS UNDER WAY!
The winning design for OASIS 2010 submitted by SSA + D, Sarah Green and Daniel Echevarria is currently in the construction documentation phase. The Google SketchUp images above are renderings of Sarah and Danny's design compliments of one of AFH Atlanta's founding members Andrew Telker. Along with getting the documents ready for Permit and Construction, we are currently drafting up an adoption agreement for the maintenance of the shelter by members of the community. We are working with a local Structural Engineer and have a Contractor on board and ready to go once we have permitting complete.
Our next steps include:
~ Finalize Adoption of the Shelter. (UPDATE) Discussion with surrounding NPU's is going on being lead by Valene Greene
~ Finalize CD's. (UPDATE) Michael Goodwin is finishing up enlarged detail sketches while Courtnie Kidd is taking revised plans, sections, and elevations sketches into CAD. (UPDATE 11.1.11) Prototype Preliminary Drawings Complete.
~ Final approval from MARTA.
~ Submission for Permit with the City.
~ Solicit donations of materials and financial sponsorships. (UPDATE) We raised some funding through our annual Birdhouse Social actual amount to be allocated to OASIS will be finalized in October.
~ Prototype Construction and Design Revisions.
~ Site installation.
During our process with the Adoption of the 2010 OASIS Shelter we have come into contact with many people with positive feedback and desire for adoption of other shelter locations that have been suggested by the community. We are very excited about discussing things with MARTA and the possibility of including some of these locations in our 2011 ARTIST CALL which will be announced very soon.
